DS Senanayake - The Leader the Nation Craves For Today

From Lankaweb, Youtube.

Senanayake played an active role in the independence movement first supporting his brother Fredrick Richard Senanayake and after his death in 1926, D. S. took his place Legislative Council and lead the independence movement. In 1931 when he was elected to the State Council, and went on to become Minister of Agriculture and Lands. He combated Ceylon’s agricultural problems effectively, and established the LDO, an agricultural policy that countered Ceylon’s rice problems. This policy earned him respect, and he continued to be a minister for fifteen years. He also enforced “Agricultural Modernisation”, which increased production output. During World War II he was a member of the Ceylon war cabinet.

However, he resigned in 1946 from his cabinet post to fight for Ceylon’s independence. That same year he founded the United National Party (UNP) by amalgamating three right-leaning pro-dominion parties, which is still one of the main political parties and perhaps the largest single party in Sri Lanka. In only a year he succeeded, and was elected as Ceylon’s first Prime Minister in the general election held in 1947. He refused a knighthood, but maintained good relations with Britain and was a Privy Councillor. He boldly made plans to spread out the population, and his Gal Oya scheme relocated over 250,000 people.

if DSS could relocate 250,000 people in 1948 why can't we do it today????

the infrastructure is already there in jaffna district.

there are enough state lands.

what lacks is the vision.

Sri Lanka wants dawn of Palestinian State in the near future
BY Ambassador Tamara Kunanayakam

Madam President,

My delegation, at the outset, associates itself with the statement delivered by Egypt on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Sri Lanka is steadfast in its support for the Palestinian people’s struggle for a sovereign, independent, viable and united State of Palestine, on the basis of the secure and recognizable borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Ouch!

SL has a deep understanding with israel. that won't change.

by supporting the egyptian move hopefully all islamic countries will support SL. that is still a good thing.

but to a limit.

nimal siripala de silva in 2008 brought a resolution at WHO against israel and passed it! we should not have done it. no point further angering USA, THAN WE HAVE TO WIN SUPPORT FROM SENSIBLE NATIONS.

"US-led World Bank loans to Rajapaksa, fortifies Colombo-dominated structure

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 21 March 2012, 06:49 GMT]

While the Eezham Tamils are hoodwinked by the ploy and decoy of a US-resolution at Geneva, and while the plight of Eezham Tamils is considerably due to a Colombo-centric structure in the island, the US-dominated World Bank headquartered in Washington has approved a loan of US$ 213 million on Thursday for the development of Colombo city. The loan has been granted under the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) institution of the World Bank for the Metro Colombo Urban Development Project. This is the first IBRD loan to Sri Lanka. Colombo metro ‘development’ project is completely in the hands of war-crimes-accused presidential sibling Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who is also a US citizen. Immediately after the war the IMF bailed out the genocidal state by granting US$ 2600 million."

Not knowing what the majority of Sri Lankans wants, US and India tries to force garbage to us. It is time now to hold a referendum and close the issue altogether. No 13th amendments and no special zones for any ethnic group. This is a country for all Sri Lankans.

Lanka warns India of repercussion over Kashmir

COLOMBO - Sri Lanka on Saturday warned India of possible repercussions over Held Kashmir after it voted for a US resolution in Geneva on rights abuses during its war on the Tamil Tigers.
Government spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said some countries or groups might use the vote on Sri Lanka as precedence to bring a similar resolution on India over the Kashmir dispute, Xinhua reported.
Sri Lanka was, however, mindful that India acted as a result of immense pressure from Tamil political parties, Abeywardena, the acting media minister, told a public meeting.
Much to the disappointment of Colombo, India was among 24 countries which voted in support of the US sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Thursday.
Fifteen countries voted against and eight abstained.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has warned that countries which voted for the resolution would have to worry about consequences of terrorism.
The Sri Lankan President commended the 15 countries which voted against ‘the anti-Lanka resolution for their support’ and the eight nations which abstained in the 47-member UNHRC. Countries which voted against Sri Lanka would have to be concerned about consequences, he was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, in an apparent move to reach out to Sri Lanka and cool down passions against India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday wrote to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, telling him that India made all efforts and succeeded in introducing an ‘element of balance’ in the US-sponsored resolution at UNHCR. Singh also stressed the need for achieving a lasting political settlement to address the grievances of minority Tamils in Lanka.
Singh wrote to Rajapaksa, “Your Excellency would be aware that we spared no effort and were successful in introducing an element of balance in the language of the resolution.” Though India voted in favour of the resolution, it worked behind the scenes to tweak the document to make it ‘non-intrusive’, the letter claimed. “It is our conviction that a meaningful devolution package, building upon the 13th Amendment, would lead towards a lasting political settlement on many of these issues and create conditions in which all citizens of Sri Lanka, irrespective of their ethnicity, can find justice, dignity, equality and self-respect,” Singh said.

Israel cuts all ties with UN human rights watchdog over settlement row

Israel is halting all cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) following the council’s decision to launch a fact-finding mission into the country’s settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry slammed the UNHCR for anti-Israeli bias, further isolating itself from the international community by moving to completely shun the inter-governmental body.

“We’re stopping all and any cooperation with the council,” a senior Foreign Ministry official said Monday, The Times of Israel reports.

From now on, we will no longer work together in any way, shape or form with any officials from the council, including the High Commissioner,” he continued. “If anyone from the council calls us, we just won’t answer the phone."

Following the announcement of the fact finding mission, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said “the council should be ashamed of itself,” calling it a “hypocritical council with an automatic majority against Israel,” the Haaretz daily cites him as saying.

Last Thursday, the UNHCR voted to send a probe to “investigate the implications of the Israeli settlements on the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the Palestinian people throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem."

The council also called on Israel “to cooperate fully with the mission."

The 47-member body adopted the draft resolution with 36 votes in favor and 10 abstentions. The United States was the only country to vote against it.

The Palestinian Authority’s ambassador to the UN, Ibrahim Khraishi, said the move was intended to keep the possibility of a two-state solution from being nullified.

“We don’t want to isolate Israel, but when we see that Israel hasn’t stopped taking over our lands, we must act. If this situation continues, how will we be able to apply a two-state solution? The occupying power is violating international law… one day there will even be limits on the air that we breathe.”

But Israeli FM Avigdor Lieberman characterized the move as another Palestinian attempt at “diplomatic terrorism.”

The expansion of Jewish settlements on the occupied territories has long been one of the primary stumbling blocks for a two-state solution.

Earlier this year, the Israeli NGO Peace Now released a report showing Israeli settlement expansion in the West bank had jumped by 20 per cent in 2011.
For the same year, the Palestine Monitor “witnessed the highest number of approved settler housing plans for Occupied East Jerusalem in the last decade.”

The trend continued into 2012, as Israeli approved the construction of 500 new homes in a settler outpost in the West Bank.
There are currently 310,000 settlers living in the West bank, with 200,000 more living in neighborhoods throughout East Jerusalem.

With that number likely to grow, the settlement issue could ultimately scuttle the flagging peace process.

in a strange way, both SL and israel face the SAME problem.

different friends but same problem.

the best thing is to do NOTHING and let the matter reach the UN security council where it will be vetoed.

WTF?

"The Karnataka government has come to know that Sri Lankan nationals have joined hands with a small group of Maoists operating in forests of Western Ghats, state Home Minister R Ashok said.

“..We have come to understand that some Sri Lankan nationals, along with a group from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, have joined hands with 25-30 Maoists operating in Chikamagalur, Udupi, Shimoga and Dakshina Kannada,” he said in the Legislative Council.

The suspected presence of Sri Lankan nationals in Western Ghats came to light after Anti-Naxal Force seized weapons and other material from Maoists in recent encounters, Ashok said replying to a question by Ashwath Narayana (Cong).

Brushing aside the idea of checking naxalism by use of gun, the Minister said the government had taken several initiatives to curb the menace.

Conceding that the Maoists were equipped with sophisticated weapons, Ashok said government had strengthened Anti-Naxal Force with modern arms and commandos were trained by a retired army major general who had expertise in jungle warfare.

Opposition Leader, Motamma (Cong), said naxalism was a social issue and the government had not done enough to create jobs in remote areas of Chikmagalur, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada to prevent the youth from falling into the trap of Maoists, PTI reports."

I think though India supported the US resolution, doubt very much they would encourage the separatist politics in SL that would lead to separatist politics in India that would bring eventual disintegration of India.Strange be fellows of Russia and China would support India at UN should there be similar resolutions against India at a future date.Perhaps some may want to exploit the ethnic divisions in Russia and China and those two countries are mindful of that.

Now that worshipping India and sacrificing our interests (just for example; crappy radars, useless Indian “aid” and contracts, spy dens in Hamba, Jaffna and Centra province to undermine us) in exchange for India “protecting” us in such events as Geneva has proven to be a failed policy will it A) teach MR a damn good lesson and B) ensure MR & BR stop going behind India like shameless spineless sycophants?

The “balancing game” has achieved nothing. China is a better friend. BR is the biggest problem, corrupt, idiotic, and useless, he worships India and like MR also tries to play idiot SL politics on the world stage. He has some very powerful obsession with India that I do not understand.

So how long till a Chinese delegation is allowed a tour of Paley and other defence + none defence establishments in the North? No need for anything permanent (for now), but just a little tour -a way of sending the message to India.

TN CM slutt jayalalitha BEGGS manmohan singh to put on hols the proposed NATIONAL COUNTER TERRORISM CENTRE

"CHENNAI: After West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's strong opposition, her Tamil Nadu counterpart Jayalalithaa today asked the Centre to put on hold formation of NCTC which is sought to be "steamrolled" into existence.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she said it was "surprising" that the Chief Ministers meeting had been convened on April 16 to discuss various matters on internal security, which included National Counter Terrorism Centre. She demanded a separate CMs meeting to discuss it.

"It is indeed unfortunate that without taking into consideration the views and sentiments of various State Chief Ministers, the constitution of NCTC is sought to be steamrolled into existence," Jayalalithaa said.

She said "at this juncture I request that the formation of the NCTC may first be ordered to be held in abeyance and a separate meeting of Chief Ministers convened only to discuss this matter." "

"Buddhist Stupa to become ‘cultural landmark’ of Jaffna harbour

[TamilNet, Thursday, 05 April 2012, 21:30 GMT]

A massive Buddhist Stupa that is being constructed at the Beach Road of Jaffna harbour by the occupying Sinhala military will be the new ‘cultural landmark’ of Jaffna city for vessels coming towards its harbour. The Stupa with pre-fabricated parts and statues, brought from the South, is being built day and night by the Sinhala soldiers. The Stupa is built in the locality of a Saivite Amman temple, between Jaffna Fort and Kurunakar, known as Aluppaanthi, meaning the wharf of the harbour. Many more Buddhist Stupas are hurriedly constructed by the SL military and one of them with extensive residential facilities is going to be just in front of the Jaffna Railway Station. During the liberation war, colonial Sri Lanka constructed a huge Buddha statue overlooking Trincomalee to give a Sinhala Buddhist cultural image to the world-renowned harbour of Eezham Tamils in the East.

There is no difference between what the European colonialists did after their military conquests and what the Sri Lanka's Sinhala military is doing now in the country of Eezham Tamils, commented civil officials in Jaffna.

In the meantime, Sinhala Buddhist Colombo has set its ‘agents’ to engage in a menacing ‘development’ campaign that people in the Jaffna peninsula need ‘cosmopolitanism’ and Tamil lands in the North and East need demographic changes for ‘development’.

The Stupa that is being built in Jaffna harbour is located in an area of predominant Tamil Catholic population. There is not even an iota of Sinhala presence in that area other than the occupying Sinhala military. While Tamil people uprooted from that part during the war are still not allowed to resettle, occupying Colombo has reclaimed land in the adjacent sea to build this new Stupa.

Hundreds of SLA soldiers were engaged in the work since Wednesday evening. The entire area has been lit up during the night to enable to soldiers to work during the nights, said Tamil National Alliance (TNA) politician A. Paranchothy, who is an opposition member of the Jaffna Municipal Council."

Moshe Dyan said...

"Sinhala Buddhist clergy to man the new Buddhist Stupas being built, have already arrived in Jaffna, informed sources said.

Already it has been noticed that building Buddhist Stupas in strategic locations along the main highways and in other places have become the most important job assignment of the occupying Sinhala Army in Vanni and in other parts of the North and East.

Jaffna city already has an extensive Buddhist establishment at the Naga Vihara, built in 1950s in the heart of the Jaffna city.

While genocidal Sri Lanka reverts back to medieval times, in what way the international system is able to deliver justice to Eezham Tamils facing structural genocide enacted through a new military model set by the Sinhala Buddhist Sri Lanka, ask social activists in Jaffna.

Colombo's rule of the Tamil country cannot be tolerated any more. India and the international community cannot pretend of not knowing the realities, they further said."
