500 Days After Victory - Challenges New and Old

It is 500 days today (30 September 2010) after the greatest ever victory to be scored by a modern security force. Since the end of the Second World War, wars are often not fought between nations. Nowadays wars are fought by proxies and between states and rebel/terrorist groups. The May 2009 victory is not the only victory over a terrorist group. There were previous instances of victories over rebel/terrorist groups. However, these rebel/terrorist groups were very small and regionalised. LTTE on the other hand was an octopus with tentacles virtually around the world. Much has been written about the victory of Sri Lanka and the defeat of the LTTE. What has not been highlighted is the fact that the root causes that gave birth to the LTTE are still around.

The Challenges of Development, Ethnic Integration and Overcoming Ethnic Politics
Uneven development was a root cause of the conflict. Districts in the north, the east and the south were neglected in development plans resulting in discontent and wide spread unemployment. Poverty of the poor masses was exploited both by the JVP and the LTTE. It is said that most LTTE cadres came from poverty stricken Batticaloa and Vanni areas than from Jaffna district where the separatist demand was strongest.

The development challenge is not about plain development. It is about development coupled with national unity and ethnic integration. If northern development fails to achieve national unity and ethnic integration, and if the fruits of development go primarily to a single race instead of people of all races, ethnic strife is going to return to this country once again.

Overcoming ethnic politics in the north and the east is the biggest challenge faced by the nation. Ethnic politics engulfed the north even before Independence. Since then it grew uglier and larger and finally produced the LTTE to fight for ethnic demands. Changing ethnic politics in the north is going to be extremely difficult. However, it must be done by creating ever expanding multiethnic settlements in the north. Simply banning racial political parties is not going to achieve anything although it is a good start.

The Real Economic Challenge
The economic challenge is not just about expanding the GDP per capita. It is about uplifting the economy of the poor to alleviate poverty, exploitation of freed-up resources in the north and the east for the direct and indirect benefit of all communities, building up a proud national economy so that outside interferers cannot dictate terms to Sri Lanka on national security, reap the benefits of global scientific developments, award a better quality of life to every Sri Lankan and supporting defence, social, cultural, political and other human endeavours through prosperity.

In ancient times, war victories were followed by rapid economic growth. King Parakramabahu the Great is considered the greatest Sri Lankan king. He treaded a path of war and invaded even faraway lands. At the same time, he rapidly uplifted the economic condition of the country. According to historical accounts, the era of the most daring warrior king was the most prosperous in Lankan history too. Large armies spearheaded the development drive following the war. All Lankan kings followed this approach, which gave them legitimacy to rule. It is the repetition of this performance that people expect from modern rulers.

However, some ancient rulers dismantled the army following war victory. This proved costly as raising an army and providing training when faced with a threat proved difficult. Maintaining a sizable army helps overcome this.

Against expectations, the defence budget allocation has risen 14% year on year to reach an astronomical 201 billion rupees, which is about 4% of the GDP. Although this percentage ranks Lanka marginally below Singapore, it brings the island nation close to the United States. United States is engaged in two costly wars thousands of miles away from home. It gives an idea how gigantic Sri Lanka’s defence spend is.  In other words, the government takes away 10,000 rupees from every man, woman and child annually claiming that it is for defence. A family of four on average contributes 40,000 rupees a year for defence. This is such a colossal amount of money for most Sri Lankan families. To make matters worse, they see no tangible improvement in their economy following the war. The bottom-line is, people pay more for defence than during the war but get nothing additional in return. If a survey is carried out island-wide asking people if they are willing to contribute 10,000 rupees per person for defence, the overwhelming majority will say ‘no’. Fading patriotism in the society doesn’t do any good either to justify excessive defence allocations. This leads us to the question - where on earth is the peace dividend?

End of war by itself doesn’t lead to rapid national development. End of war allows development activities to take place, which in turn create economic activity in the long run. Peace dividend comes from the utilization of freed resources. If freed up resources are not put to productive use, there will not be any peace dividend. Improvements in the tourism sector and large projects carried out by foreign parties with loans do not lead to tangible improvements in peoples’ economy. In order to profit from peace, people must own economic assets that generate profit.

Security forced freed up more than 10,000 square kilometres of land and over 750 kilometres of coastline. However, these have not been put to enough productive use. Creating new settlements is as important as resettlement. When creating new settlements, racial considerations must be disregarded. If mono ethnic racial enclaves are to be maintained, then there is no tangible peace that facilitates economic prosperity. In other words, race should not bar anyone from exploiting economic resources freed up by security forces.

Due to huge population density disparities, today there are more landless farmers and fishermen in the ‘south’ than in the ‘north’. If the north is to remain exclusively for a particular race, more than 90% of the population will be deprived of freed up resources. There can be no real improvement in economic development in such an atmosphere. To make matters worse, such conditions may lead to social unrest. Previous instances of similar social unrest killed more civilians in two years than 34 years of war.
Defence establishment must be told in no uncertain terms that public funds are not a bottomless pit. As the biggest employer and one of the largest managers of budget funds, the defence establishment should be compelled to save cost and eventually help convert the defence expenditure into an investment. It must also facilitate multiethnic economic settlements in the north.

re: SF

taking him to prison at 10:30 PM in the night shows the intention of screwwing him to the max.

the hatred among the two old friends is growing and it will NEVER be the same again.

but SF MUST be handled for the safety of the nation, its armed forces, its leaders and the good name. he should never have gone against SL.

janaka perera was framed by the LTTE internationale in exchange for not creating trouble over war crimes. he threatened to dismantle TMVP security centres in polonnaruwa that was CRITICAL to keep the east safe. he would have certainly (using his ENORMOUS power within the army) created war crimes BS against the govt had he been around.

we have a genuine problem in SLA. retired SLA top officials must be directed towards a PROPER and rewarding 'career progression' or a new career. they are TOTALLY forgotten after retirement. knowing this loophole, anti-SL elements bait them. SF got to know this very well when he kicked mongal after the election defeat. he could have turned back but being SF it was not an option! the other option is to turn back the SLA into a more ceremonial army so that retirees are not capable leaders. this is a short sighted approach.

the govt is doing the right thing at a small scale now by offering them diplomatic posts. these offer prestige, a decent job, comparative luxury, etc. it is a step in the right direction. top jobs in administration - governors, etc.is also good. major political parties should be able to accomodate them without demanding them to surrender their love for the nation as in israel. sadly both major national parties are headed by anti-SLs at the moment!! and the powerful TNA and SLMC of course. so it falls back on the powerful anti-SL political ideology ALREADY present in SL.

Disagree.

Methinks it was better to do it at that time and I might even have thought 1am would have been better. This was done, with no fan-fare as possible at 10pm, mostly to avoid a protest of the most vile kind from the washed-out JVP dinosaurs (where mindless violence and damage to public property would have been the norm) and I think it worked very well. As such, no, I don't think this had anything to do with growing animosity between old friends as you put it.

Besides, this is too simplistic of a notion (the 10pm issue) not worth a second thought when you consider that at the time of his arrest, there was enough evidence pointing to SF's plans to arrest MR/GR/etc. and incarcerate them at Bogambara prison, likely even "guns going off while resisting arrest" type of a plot also thrown in for good measure as per some quarters, and as such, I don't think this 10pm thingy is a big deal anyway (even if one were to disregard my earlier rationalization per what I have been able to gather on that).

Oct 2, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today that money would be allocated from the next year's budget to develop all roads under the Provincial Council road authorities.

The Provincial Councils are responsible in developing roads using these allocations, the President said participating in the district coordinating committee meeting of Polonnaruwa district.

**The President said that the relevant project officer is answerable to the spent money and emphasized that the roads should have a guarantee for at least 20 years. He also warned the project officers that they would have to pay the loss caused by low quality constructions.**

The President said that although there are 20 million people in Sri Lanka only 300,000 pay taxes.

*****************
These are good signs if implemented firmly.

The President directed the Chairmen of the Pradeshiya Sabhas to levy the cost for the damages to roads under the local councils due to heavy vehicles from the owners of such vehicles.

**He said laws would be brought to ban travel of heavy vehicles weighing over eight tons on roads belonged to the local governmental bodies.**

During his visit to the district President Rajapaksa also paid homage to the sacred Gal Viharaya in Polonnaruwa today and received blessings from its chief incumbent Ven. Vendaruwe Sri Upali Nayaka thero.

"Our aim is a secure, developed and secular Sri Lanka where democracy, human rights and civil liberties reign."

I'd say, we are lack of everything you mentioned above except the word secular. Sri Lanka has been one of the most secular nations in the region. We have no conflict based on a religion. It is wonderful (if not confusing) to see a Hindu Kovil inside a Buddhist temple and giant Mosques and Churches next to it.

Do you think civil rights of General SF has been violated?

I also argue that Sri Lanka is not mature enough to have a democratic status and therefore Rajapakse politics are justified.

why we are HEAVILY into defence

in SL defence is something that is invoked as and when the need is MOST. that is a very unhealthy way of handling defence.

by human rights we mean REAL human rights where EVERYONE has human rights and equal rights. we don't necessarily follow the human rights business. for them only profitable nishes have HRs.

yes, SL lacks many thing we desire. but we are getting there.

we believe in a balance between rights and responsibilities. sadly in SL no one seems to talk about responsibilities (= rights of OTHERS!)

N. Korea aided LTTE : Rohan Saturday, 02 October 2010 01:52
By Lakna Paranamanna

The North Korean Government aided the LTTE in procuring weapons since 1997 until the end of the conflict, International Counter Terrorism expert Prof. Rohan Gunaratna alleged yesterday.

Speaking before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) Prof. Gunaratna said it was LTTE Auditor/ Accountant Ponniah Anandarajah who was involved in procuring arms through the North Korean Government to the LTTE. “He was operating from outside Thailand and almost all the major weapons were procured from North Korea,” he said. Prof. Gunaratna added that it is important for the Sri Lankan Government to let North Korea know that they are aware of the information. He said apart from the propaganda and fund raising activities which the LTTE conducted globally in the form of front cover and sympathetic organizations, the procurement and shipping of arms were heavily carried out through the accumulated funds. “Although the LTTE exploited some of the Middle Eastern and Western European countries for arms procurement, they initially procured their arms from India and the Indian Government facilitated it,” Prof. Gunaratna said.

“Unfortunately at this point, Sri Lanka did not understand the importance of maintaining a good relationship with India,” he said. Prof. Gunaratna stressed on the importance maintaining a good relationship with India if peace is to be established in Sri Lanka.

Lanka should counter negative image

By Lakna Paranamanna

International counter terrorism expert Prof. Rohan Gunaratna said the Sri Lankan Government should at least now take steps to issue a white paper to counter the accusations of alleged war crimes during the final stages of the war.

“As a country Sri Lanka failed to project the ground reality of what happened and the LTTE took advantage of the situation. The Government should have issued a white paper on the fifth no-fire zone and the failure was a miserable letdown on the part of Sri Lankan leaders,” he said speaking before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) yesterday.

Therefore, he said the Government should at least take steps now to issue a white paper stating the number of casualties and fatalities during the war. Based on his interviews with the LTTE doctors and coroners and doctors who operated in the areas of the final clash, Prof. Gunaratne said that the number of civilian casualties would only be a maximum of about 1400 although the UN still quotes the number as 7000.

LTTE International network still active
Prof. Gunaratna said although the LTTE had been dismantled militarily within Sri Lanka, the global network of the LTTE still remained untouched. “There are some 42 LTTE officers operating in North America itself. The main mistake which the Governments in Sri Lanka have been making over the years is focusing solely on defeating the LTTE militarily.

Therefore no effort was made to dismantle the international network,” he pointed out. He remarked that it was the LTTE member Nediyawan operating in Norway who currently runs the LTTE structure although Selvarasa Pathmanathan aka KP is currently known as the successor to LTTE leader Prabhakaran “Nediyawan promotes Prabhakaran’s agenda and hence there is no significant shift in LTTE leadership.

The North Korean Tamil Connection

North Korea is again in the news. It is alleged that a North Korean torpedo sank the South Korean corvette a few months ago. Due to unique specifications of North Korean weapons it has been easy to identify weapons originating from there anywhere in the world. North Korean weapons heading to terrorist groups is a hot topic of defence analysis around the world. Tamil Tigers are one such terrorist group that benefited from the North Korean connection and Tamil section still benefit from it. Tamil Tigers entered record books for their daring seaborne suicide missions and the wide array of armaments including ships, attack boats, submarines, torpedoes, human torpedos, under water demolition teams, suicide boats, floating warehouses and an active feeder boats service.

The torpedo that sank the ship has been prototyped in this picture from the South Korean Defence Ministry. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1279828/North-Korean-torpedo-DID-sink-Souths-navy-ship-propellor-lettering-proves.html

It shows an eerie resemblance to Tamil Tiger torpedos that were suspected to be from North Korean origin. These pictures taken by the Sri Lanka army shows Tamil torpedos procured most likely from North Korean sources. http://www.army.lk/detailed.php?NewsId=854

Tigers buried these underground to avoid detection in carefully planned yards. How and when they were transported to the island is not known. Sri Lankan forces don’t use torpedos or any other underwater explosive devices. Had the Tamil Tigers the capability to take these into the sea and launch them, the impact would have been catastrophic. Similarities include the type of propeller, the length, the shape and the generation.

Tamil Tigers are the only terrorists in the world to use submarines. Their submarine technology was so developed that a midget submarine manufacturing factory was located by security forces. This video clip shows the extent of the operation. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=b94_1233480850

Also the following report details the Tamil submarine building operation. http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?150716-Army-Finds-Tamil-Tiger-Rebel-Submarine-Factory-In-Jungle&p=3889838

Once again the genre of midget submarines point to a North Korean connection. Tamils seems to have been dealing with businesses operated from Pyongyang for a very long time to buy weapons and get the technology transferred.

In 2006 a Tamil with LTTE connections was arrested accused of trying to smuggle cocaine in a semi-submersible home made submarine. It is clear evidence how Tamil Tigers around the world share North Korean technology for illegal activities.

A report written by Congressional Research Service (CRS) of the USA points out North Korean arms and training to Tamil Tigers and Hezbollah fighters. http://in.reuters.com/article/idINIndia-30964520071213

The CRS report stated that Sankei Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, in September 2007 published a report that North Korea had shipped arms to Tamil Tigers. These wide ranging news sources all confirm the strong connection North Korea had with Tamils whose arms procuring and money collection racket runs around the world.

This report quotes from reputable defence sources how Sea Tigers used rare North Korean manufactured 107mm rockets to attack Sri Lanka navy vessels in Trincomalee in 2000. http://www.lankalibrary.com/pol/korea.htm

However, it was not only Tamil Tigers that engaged North Korean capabilities. After the defeat of Tamil Tigers in 2009, Tamils still use North Korean capabilities. The North Korean ship Ocean Lady is still being used by Tamil groups for human trafficking. http://www.canada.com/news/Migrant+ship+seized+coast+belongs+Tamil+Tigers+experts/2142102/story.html

A concerted global mechanism is needed to route Tamils’ North Korean connection that is currently engaged in transferring terrorist capabilities, drug trafficking and human trafficking. Defeat of Tamil Tigers has not stopped this lucrative trade.

Allow me to express my views about your above statement. It seems that you are inserting the words "anti-LTTE" in the phrase "driven by arrogance." It is hard for me to see the term arrogance in a context opposing a bunch of murderous terrorists who are hell bent on carving out an unholy neverland of Eelam from Sri Lanka. What you try to paint as anti-LTTE arrogance is the legitimate right of Sri Lankans to defend themselves and the country. Please clarify your position.

There was no need to murder Prabakaran at all. Murder is a term used in civil violence, not in a military conflict. In the case you are not aware, Prabakaran is a terrorist leader who raised an illegitimate army to wage a terrorists war against the people of Sri Lanka. He was simply killed in the war, not murdered. Even the usage of term murder is an act of white washing terrorism. Irrespective of semantics, the separatist drive personified by the terrorist Prabakaran is alive in some parts of the world. We are not fools to think otherwise and let our guards down. Yes indeed, we shall get together to rebuild our lost paradise. However, we should never ever cut down our defensive stance for ever.

The law is something that should be applicable to every citizen regardless of who they are and what they are connected with.

It is the world view that the law has been applied to punish General Fonseka to kill his political ambitions.

If that law is applied to others, we will have many political leaders in prison including our own Tamil brothers in the East who is responsible for killing over 600 unarmed policemen.

It appears the law has applied to save ton of legal trouble of some powerful people in SL.

They all know who is SF. I came to know very late but they knew. They know now even more.

Do they care? What matters for them is their salvage.

The first reason why SF should be punished is to prevent him furhter stabbing on the Nation and to eliminate even the slightest chance of he is grabbing political power.

Why he is so loved by LTTE now? Because he is the True Sun God the Second, mightier than the first.

One More Thing:

Some argue that there are many wrong doers who have not been punished.(Anyway this is the case in any country for various reasons. Football players, when they rape, even Universities defend their star players. OJ Simpson evaded justice. I know in Sri Lanka, Law and order needs to be brought to more desirable levels)

But some use this valid argument in an invalid way to demand to release all social threats from jails hoping to get the social SF also released.

But I argue the same case, to put other evil doers also in. We may start with Ranil. The worst crimes Ranil did was to sign CFA and bring SF closer to executive executioner of SRi Lanka. But there are some other politicians in all sides who deserve the same fate.

At any rate, I will not advocate any thing that contravenes the law of the land.

Defence Analytics said...

Moshe, old boy, I found the below paragraph from article by Lionel Beehner nicely summing up the dilemma US is in.

The U.S. military, given the constraints it faces and wariness of the war back home, suffers from the Goldilocks paradox: It applies just enough force to upset the locals and kill civilians, yet not enough to actually dislodge the threat and win the war. The result is a worst-of-both-worlds scenario: An angry populace and an entrenched non-state actor. If governments are unwilling to deploy sufficient force to fight insurgents because it will undermine their democratic values, then a better model to follow is not a middle-road solution but rather one that relies on minimal force, a smaller military footprint, and scaled-back expectations, combined with stepped-up policing and intelligence-sharing

I think Sri Lanka also followed the same flawed strategy of applying just enough force to piss off the civilians and not do enough damage to the terrorists for a long time.

Cheers!

Is it acceptable to spend millions of tax payers money to attend UN conferences with large numbers?

Why there are large number of relatives of one family running practically everything in Sri Lanka?

I agree, SF should have been punished. I supported him until all allegations came out. We should also punish other wrong doers as well.

How many US Millitary leaders's offsprings are being educated in Sri Lanka? Do they make enough money to send their kids abroad?

How many politicians children are now living in abroad? Where do they get money for that?

How come these things are being ignored since we are too patriotic?

LTTE surge represents the weakness of a nation and its leadership and finally we got things right with a huge cost.

SF was a key player of that. If he was the traitor that everyone likes to label, that should have been known to his appointees. Using him to get the victory we want and treating him that way shows how weak we are.

We let LTTE Terrorism roam free and control our lives. We have been dragged back in to the history and denied the progress seen by other nations.

I blame SL leadership for that more than LTTE.

Few people or Terrorists outsmarted the weak majority.

Celebration of the victory over LTTE is like dancing around by hiding all our weaknesses which will bound to come out again unless we fix them.

So the solution to fix our weaknesses is not to create dozens of defense blogs like this and reinforce our physical defense.

What about Pillian, Karuna?
Why KP is not executed?
Why Mervyn has been rewarded well?

Justice is a weapon in Sri Lanka to prosecute who are a threat to us. That is called kangaroo justice in certain part of the world.

Can we build a strong society with weak fundamental values within us?

The answer is NO.

Shree,

I had a few questions for you above but you never answered them. We know that you are not a SF supporter but a LTTE supporter. Please do not waste your time proving otherwise.

You are just walking all over with clearly off the topic comments. Besides the fact that you do not know how much MR spent fore his presidential visit, that discussion is not relevant to the post above. How many ministers send their kids to other countries is clearly irrelevant for the discussion. This is not a place to discuss that kind of issues. Please respect the blog authors intent. I strongly suggest you staying reasonably within the subject.

My views are in line with what Swarnajith Udana says above.

You say
"We know that you are not a SF supporter but a LTTE supporter."

Then you say
"Please try to stay reasonably within the topic. "

You are entitled to your opinion. The readers are smart enough to figure whether they are right or wrong.

Those who are driven by fear always try to tarnish the image of others by accusing them as LTTE followers.

I challenge to prove your opinion that I am an LTTE supporter.

Sam, what behavior affect negatively the most to our security in Sri Lanka?

1) Being an blind LTTE supporter
2) Being a blind government supporter
3) Being blind JVP

Do you think LTTE supporters can enjoy this?

Perhaps it is an LTTE production to laugh at your government. The latest eposide starts out with the guy yelling "pinguththaraya". That reflects the SL government view on the general public.

I find that satire to be very enlightening (not as in Nirvana).

Sam Perera said...

Shree,

As I said, please don't waste you time convincing others that you are not a LTTE supporter. However, it is not a problem to carry on a dialog. Being blind or acting blind to security threats is going to affect our security. That is why we try to analyze the defence risks. Our interest is defence of Sri Lanka, nothing else. Now, can you please tell us exactly what laws were broken in prosecuting SF?

We need to market what we are good at.

We can also open up a school to teach our new democracy to foreigners as well.

Any thoughts on what should we do about it and how that should be done without following what we did to dismantle SF's future?

One thing we can do is to make soldiers available for foreign mission - voluntary basis. That will bring them ton of foreign currency without sacrificing our women as house maids.

Sam Perera said...

Shree,

I am mostly interested in future defence of this country, not about the status of Fonseka. We can carry a dialog forward if you are interested in future defence of Sri Lanka. I can assure you that you are going to waste the time otherwise.

I am less interested in learning democracy when it comes from LTTE pretenders and baseless commies, specially those ViKoSa nut jobs.

Now on establishing defence universities, we don't need any semi-deserted Buddhist temples. We have the power and means to acquire any suitable land for creating a defence university.

in SL, the govt tied the war to the voting public very well ensuring continued two way support.

dismantling SF's furure is part of strengthening SL's security!!

he threatened to bring the nation, its democratically elected leaders, its military and the ppl into disrepute.

he is a national security threat.

of course there are other NS threats too. we want all of them behind bars.

but we are happy at least one threat to NS is behind bars! a very good start.

individuals change but the national security policy cannot change. IF GR goes against NS, we should have systems to put him behind bars too.

SF conduct also cast doubt on his contribution to the war. he sure did a HUGE contribution but not enough compared to some others who CONTUNE to make GIGANTIC contributions.

SF could have done much better service to the nation as CDS than army commander but he did absolutely nothing!! he called it a civilian post!!

defence secretary is also a civilian post, CDS was anyway a civilian post but how much did previous less powerful CDSs contribute to war strategy???

even the defence minister is a civilian post!

and more imoprtantly, the post of president which SF tried to win is also a civilian post!

re: kudankulam nuke plant of india

colobopage.com reports that SL will take up the matter with india

we discussed this long time ago.

it is situated in the southernmost tip of india. when fully functional it will have 9.2 GWh electricity which makes it one of the largest.

any sizable leak, explosion or terrorist attack will have a DEVASTATING impact on TN and possibly SL too.

interestingly given the monssons, the south-west monsoon can send the stuff over the jaffna peninsular and northern parts of vanni.

the north east monsson will not affect SL as it will send the stuff away from SL and TN.

intermediate wind flows can affect the north-west to western coastal areas.

also russian reactors are notoriously bad when it comes to the environment. i'm 95% sure the water used to cool it will be released to the sea nearby. this will have a huge impact.

if 1971 karachchi type attack or a 2008 mumbai type of attack takes place targeting this plant, part of TN will be written off. bopal #2????? this time not the americans but the russians!!!

He was the last foot soldier to rise against Ranil and CBK's pressure to sell us all. Manifestation of his friction with Rajapakse is never a compromise of our security.

"he threatened to bring the nation, its democratically elected leaders, its military and the ppl into disrepute. "

It is news to me that we have a democracy. Perhaps it is one of these abused words like patriotism.

dear shree,

true SF did all that. for that he was very well rewarded.

but that doesn't mean he can violate the law.

it is not about friction with rajapaksa. it is about REPEATEDLY violating the law and becoming a PERSISTENT national security threat.

OK, SL democracy is bruised, wounded, etc. but still it is a democracy. there are 15+ private media outlets, 40+ political parties, 10+ political parties in parliament, elections when due, a reasonably independant judiciary as one would expect in a developing country, etc. IF SL is not a democracy, we can dismantle these and save some money!!

re: buddhist monks

they follow religion, not the law.

it is still good if SF can stay away from prison and stop being a national security threat. that is the line they are taking.

but the law is different.

"dealt a final blow to the country’s human rights, civil liberties and true democracy. Charu Latta Hogg, an associate fellow at London-based think tank Chatham House, says that Sri Lanka is heading ‘towards a totalitarian state’."

1. the two sentences are contradictory.

one says the final blow to true democracy has been delivered. the other says SL is HEADING TOWARDS a totalitarian state.

2. she is comparing SL democracy with LONDON democracy! of course we lack democracy when compared against london democracy!

3. she has made errornoes claims in the past.

mark my word. these are NOT the last things these ppl say about SL democracy. they will AGAIN say similar things about SL democracy in future. why?? bcos STILL SL has democracy.

how can you kill a dead person????
how can you kill dead democracy which died in 1978 according to some???

unless SL democracy has 9+ lives! IF SO, we have nothing to worry about SL democracy!!

at the next election, EU will send election observers. to do a post mortem on democracy?? NO. to monitor the election!!

the problem of SL democracy is we had a first class democracy in 1948 but a very poor economy. the poor abused the democracy to get various fancy things. now the economy and democracy are trying for an equilibrium.

Let me get this right, by telling about HR issues and SF issues, one automatically become an LTTE supporter, OK?

Does that tell me you have been well abused by LTTE and become useless attack dogs who don't use their rational intelligence?

I presume a slap from a thalathel brother really hurts... ha?

Now getting back to the development in Sri Lanka...

How can this be a reality when the worrier's leader have been slapped due to a personal conflict with political leadership?

I've heard SF was pretty popular among soldiers more so than the top leadership.

Are you satisfied with the way how we take care of fallen veterans?

Are you also satisfied how the 'discipline' is working within the political leaders?

Is Nepotism considered discipline?

Do you know its impact on the hearts and minds of people who suppose to develop this nation?

Sam Perera said...

Shree,

I am very satisfied with the way we take care of the fallen and injured heroes. We build them houses and provide other assistance to their families in our very best capacity. That is a clear indication that we are on the right track to develop the nation.

Warrior leader or not, those who compromise national security should be given the harshest punishments. Any act of insubordination or treason shall be treated from an uncompromising position.

Contrary to what you heard, most of the soldiers voted for MR, not for SF. If you can pullout, please check the postal votes during both elections to understand where hearts of the soldiers were. The bottom line is that we are interested in the security of our nation, not a general who committed treason. Our national security is much bigger than one person.

I don't have a terrorist agenda like yours to plant seeds of discontent and disunity in my country. I am under no delusion that we can turn around the secondary effects of 33 years of your terrorism in two years. I believe that it will take a decade or two to clean the house.

What exactly is the nepotism you are talking about? I see the highly committed, trustworthy, and qualified people in the right places. Just in case you are talking about GR, he has performed and performing beyond my wildest expectations. I have lots of faith in his efforts based on the greatest example of defeating your terrorist movement.

I played like a satirist just for fun and also to see who the attack dogs are on this thread.

No wonder you have become blind patriots and protectors of one of the most corrupt regimes in the world.

Next time when you bark, please at least cover your rear ends from the tail.

You guys so lack of critical thinking - a direct result of our free public ineffective educational system.

By the way, who is our minister of Higher Education now?

KB,

Yep, this Kazhuthai is working up his way to disrupt the blog in the very same manner they used to do in the past. They go places assuming a false racial and intellectual superiority as reflected by some funny "critical thinking" that consider terrorist to be leaders. However, we have the tools in our hand to take care of it if we want to.

Sam Perera said...

KB,

The transsexual government is basically a budding up tool for certain meddling nations to interfere with Sri Lanka. However, their demands are nothing less than that of LTTE to carve out a separate country out of our country. Just like Velu the Terrorist, they continue from an unrealistic position. As usual, these kazhuthais do not have the brains to adept. On the positive side, these transsexual kazhuthais are banned on Sri Lankan soil. They will never ever set their feet in the current form. They can throw tantrums they like.

Sam Perera said...

KB,

On the other hand, we should allow these kazhuthais to live in their fantasy transsexual governments with the office of PM, Ministers, etc. This reminds me one of those high school projects where we formed mock governments for learning purposes. This whole transsexual thing may be result of sudden deprivation of LTTE propaganda in May 2009.

Sorry to hurt your feelings as the last three posts have been directed at 'my people' ha ha!!

Yes, I feel I am intellectually and physically superior as I am coming from a lion - ha ha!!

On the other hand, if we want to weaken LTTE elements in the west, we should bring China, Iran, and Russia closer to our heart - ha ha!!

Let me help you to keep your patriotism well alive: Try not to get angry with what I say. Think about them instead. The faster you realize them, the faster we prosper - don't you think?

Sam, old chap, this Rudrakumaran bugger has a track record of providing material support to a terrorist organization banned in US. Of course we know the bugger is an out-and-out terrorist, not a mere supporter. However SL government should push this line against the little wanker to make his life miserable. We can also get Interpol to issue an international warrant again him for crimes committed against the nation.

Cheers!

Interesting, they are tying devolution of power to Tamils to the economic growth.

Given that SL minorities have more entrepreneurial skill than the majority Sinhalese Buddhists, it is a very valid assumption.

Work ethics of the minority, specially the labor force is is greater by looking at how hard minority workers work in fields around.

So, it is important to get everyone involved in the growth process.

Forget the minority, it is the majority that can benefit from the devolution of power.

We are in Sri Lanka are so class minded and therefore have no regard to the lives of working class.

CBK disappointed me since most woman's rights in Sri Lanka were never uplifted despite having a woman as the leader of the nation.

Recently I heard we sent some women to US and Canada as nurses. I highly support that over sending to clean the toilets of Arabs.

I think this is something we can do to raise the awareness and find a way not to send hundreds of thousands of our women as hard labor.

Moshe Dyan said...

shree,

a very noble intent indeed!

yes, we can take up the matter. i doubt we can increase awareness in the society. only very few can become nurses.

we have to press the authirities to increase the intake, have the necessary infrastructure. the demand to study to become nurses is there.

MR promised this 3 years ago but noting much as happened. this exact demand came from the JHU. it doesn't matter who said it, its the LEAST govt should do. let me see what knowledge is avialable on the subject.

from adaderana quoting ANI.

"Krishna likely to open strategic Jaffna, Hambantota consulates end October: ReportOctober 5, 2010 11:59 pm
New Delhi, Oct. 5 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna is likely to inaugurate two Indian consulates in Hambantota and Jaffna during his four-day visit to Sri Lanka in the last week of October.

The opening of the consulate office in Hambantota is significant in the wake of the Chinese having already established a strategic presence there through the construction of a harbour.

The proposed Indian consulate will cover activities in the districts of Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Moneragala.

India has maintained that the Chinese-aided Hambantota project, which opens in November, does not pose any security threat. However, there are concerns in New Delhi over the rising Chinese influence in Sri Lanka.

India has only one consulate in Kandy and the opening of consulates in Jaffna and Hambantotta is an attempt to reach out and spread its sphere of influence to counterweigh China, according to analysts.

Sections of India’s strategic community believes Hambantota is part of a Chinese policy to throw a string of pearls geographical circle of influence around India and is aimed at counterbalancing and undermining India’s natural influence in Sri Lanka.

The port project, which will give alternate access to Chinese goods through the Indian Ocean, was earlier offered to India according to Lankan officials.

China is also developing port facilities in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan, and has plans for constructing railway projects in Nepal.

China is pumping nearly six billion dollars in the form of grants and funding of projects in Sri Lanka.

To check Beijing’s rising influence, New Delhi has also accelerated its aid programme and has offered concessionary credit facilities amounting to about 800 million dollars for the railway projects in Sri Lanka.

The proposed consulate in Jaffna will cover the five districts of the war-ravaged Northern Province - Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mullaithivu, Vavuniya and Mannar.

The consulate will help rehabilitate and streamline the humanitarian assistance to the displaced Tamils.

India had pledged to build 50,000 houses in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, the Jaffna Cultural Center, the Jaffna Teaching Hospital and the Duraiappah Stadium.

During his expected visit, Krishna will reportedly review progress of Indian-aided projects and is likely to reassure New Delhi’s commitment to rebuilding infrastructure in the war-ravaged nation.

He is also expected to call on Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa. - (ANI)"

{If we are disciplined the way you say we are, SF mess would never have happened.]}

Arsehole, having traitors supporting the enemy (whether militarized or not) is not unique to SL.

During the WWII and even post-WWII, there were enough British traitors who wanted to side with the enemy and fukk Britain (but Britain’s Intelligence Services were too smart and fukked them before they could fukk Britain).

For example check:

http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?27349-Full-list-of-suspected-UK-traitors-WWII

So Tamizia bitch, it is not a matter “discipline” that was the crux of the issue, but a simple but grand GREED on the part of a single individual who started a false, self-serving "white flag" story for rewards (no different to the British traitors who were promised grand rewards by the Germans).

SF actually was on LTTE money by the time he came out in the open for politics (which is why he agreed to merge North and East).

Individual GREED is something even the best discipline cannot guarantee – as we see from our own example.

Anyway, I am truly laughing when I see you using “WE” in your posts – when we patriots know you are a LTTE Tamizia whoredog.

The other is a former hero, who turned sides and declared allegiance to the terrorists' agenda (merging North and East for example) and went even further by falsely implicating the GOSL/SLDF on "war crimes".... the accusastion that indiputably made SL lose the GSP+ , resuling in over $billions of revenue to the nation and unemployment of the garment sector poor people.

Canadian Tamils support Sarath Fonseka

http://www.adaderana.lk/news.php?nid=10107

It is now no surprise to see in Tamil shops and establishments in the West a portrait of Gonseka next to Praba. It is also why all the anti-national forces who never supported the war effort are rallying around the traitor Fonseka. They are merely continuing what they have been doing for the last 5 years believing that the broken Fonseka card is enough to show the people their “nationalistic credentials” which they believe the masses of this country are stupid enough to fall for. The height of their arrogance and disdain for the masses is evident in this belief as they view the people as stupids to be tricked and conned, unaware that the people have seen right through this trickery and know fully well that these criminals are allergic to nationalism (as witnessed during the war years) because for them all they have is what was “earned” by selling our nation and people out to foreigners, specially their white masters.

After all SF tried to facilitate Prabakaran's escape as ordered by Blake anna. Hence his continuous statements back in April 2009 that Praba had already escaped -using such statements to create confusion AND to attack the Navy Commander (who Gonseka hates due to a school boy dispute plus the fact that unlike Fonskea the Navy commander was a brilliant strategist and hard worker who gave results and revolutionised the Navy by strengthen the SBS, creating the RABS and improving indigenous ship production).

Such an order not only benefited the West and its despicable attitudes and domineering projects no matter how unethical and immoral (they after all ordered the LTTE to engineer a humanitarian catastrophe by creating a human shield to justify intervention to prolong war and misery in Sri Lanka) but Fonskea as well.

Two blood soaked birds with one giant stone for the Fonskeas: 1) Fonseka pleases his white masters by carrying out their orders and the war continues 2) He can keep making money out of the war through his HiCorp. Fonskea after all said back in 2008 there would be a low level insurgency lasting for decades, this was more a desire of his and his masters than a fact -a fact Gotabaya ensured never happened. It should be noted that it is ILLEGAL for any US based company to do Military related business with Sri Lanka, yet HiCorp is the only US based company allowed to do so as it has clearance from the US State Department –the same State Department which put the ban in the first place.

Fonseka’s connections with Blake anna doing wonders for him. That stone had a massive engraving saying “HiCorp”.
